Seattle-based restaurant 13 Coins is expanding to Southwest Washington. Vancouver-based Kirkland Development announced Wednesday that a new 13 Coins location will open at the upcoming Hotel Indigo and Kirkland Tower project at The Waterfront Vancouver.
It’s the third major food and beverage tenant announced for the project, following a new branch of El Gaucho steakhouse and a wine bar from Evoke Winery (the Hood River, Ore., company changed its name from Naked Winery last month).
The 13 Coins restaurant is a mainstay of the Seattle food scene, known for offering fine dining around the clock, although the pandemic has currently trimmed its hours. The first location opened in 1967 and the business later expanded to additional branches in SeaTac and downtown Bellevue. The Vancouver restaurant will be the company’s fourth, located in a 4,865-square-foot, two-story suite on the north side of the Hotel Indigo building.
“The situation had to be perfect for us to expand outside of the Seattle area,” 13 Coins owner Al Moscatel said in a statement. “Dean and Kristin Kirkland, their family, and the entire development team presented an incredible opportunity for us at The Waterfront Vancouver. We plan on bringing the best that 13 Coins has to offer, and we’re looking forward to being a part of the Vancouver community for many years to come.”
The Waterfront location marks a return to the Portland market – 13 Coins once operated in the KOIN Center in downtown Portland but closed many years ago. The tower’s ground floor restaurant suite is now occupied by Morton’s The Steakhouse.
Kirkland Development Chairman Dean Kirkland described himself as a longtime customer at the Seattle and Bellevue 13 Coins locations and said he’d long hoped to be able to bring a new branch to the Waterfront.
“I’ve always had a great admiration for the 13 Coins brand, and even more so now that I’ve gotten to know Al and his team,” he said in a statement. “It’s inspiring to see more and more businesses, like 13 Coins, choose to expand to Vancouver. To me, this is just proof of the growth that we’ll continue to see in Southwest Washington.”
The Hotel Indigo and Kirkland Tower are being built as a single project but will function as two adjacent buildings. The boutique hotel is eight stories and will have 138 rooms, while the 12-story tower will house 40 luxury condominiums.
The project broke ground in 2018 and is still under construction, with the exterior largely complete at this point. The press release did not include opening dates, but Kirkland Development Director of Project Development Dana Gardner said the El Gaucho buildout is currently underway and 13 Coins and Evoke will probably open in the fall of this year.
